6 Spots to Eat & Drink Outdoors in the Mile Square

There’s something special about summertime in the Mile Square. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, thousands of Hoboken residents escape the confines of their winter coops to enjoy the warm weather and explore all that this city has to offer, because let’s face it, sometimes we forget that we live in one of the most magical cities – with skyline views of Manhattan, parks, piers and a plethora of charming shops and restaurants.

When it comes to outdoor dining, Hoboken has so many awesome spots for friends and family to enjoy. Whether you’re planning your three-day weekend, making the most of your company’s Summer Friday policy, or just looking for new places to eat and drink this summer, here are six of our favorite outdoor dining options:

Situated on the Hoboken waterfront, this eatery, which pays homage to Frank Sinatra, is an Italian lover’s dream – with everything from antipasti, salads, pastas, pizzas, paninis and assorted coffees.

Outdoor patio seating is available in the spring and summer, along with a raw bar and gelato stand (yes, please!).

Since 2011, Las Olas has delighted Hoboken residents with its unique array of offerings – encompassing signature sushi rolls, wok & grill, tacos and more. Tartare dishes are paired with homemade tortilla chips, an unlikely but appetizing match.

The courtyard dining area seats plenty, and provides a quaint and charming ambiance any time of day. Visit Las Olas on Wednesday for 2 for 1 classic sushi rolls, Thursday for happy hour and all-you-can-eat wings, and Sunday for $12 sangria pitchers.

This cozy uptown spot is one of Hoboken’s hidden gems. If you’re looking to stray from the hustle and bustle of busy Washington Street, the peaceful outdoor café at Carpe Diem is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the warm weather.

Carpe Diem offers everything from comfort food to Irish pub fare and award-winning chicken wings. On a Saturday in the summer, you’re rest assured to find hundreds of millennials hanging out and catching some rays at Pier 13 (P13R). The outdoors-only spot is the perfect Hoboken haven for those hungry for a backyard party atmosphere. Some of the hottest local food trucks line the entrance to the Pier, which extends out into the Hudson, providing unparalleled casual grab-and-go options. From Dark Side of the Moo to Mac Truck, Amanda’s Bananas, Glazed and Confused, Lexylicious, JimmyDawns, Luke’s Lobster and Bro-Ritos – to name a few – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. I admit it – there are plenty of nights when I get home late from work and pop an Ellio’s in the oven. It happens to the best of us. But when you’re craving a real pizza, look no further than Dozzino. This artisanal pizza shop has a modest but mouthwatering menu, including daily crostinis and unique pies, like the La Roma (an Italian delicacy with fior di latte [made in-house using curd from Caputo Brothers Creamery], tomato and sorpressata) and the Diavola, flavored to perfection with red pepper and calabrese salami. All ingredients are sourced locally and brought in daily, giving the dishes a super fresh flair.

An adorable outdoor dining area boasts bistro tables and twinkling string lights that illuminate the patio after the sun sets. A bocce ball court provides the perfect, post-dinner activity.

Boylan soda bottles are available for purchase, but the restaurant is BYOB for fellow wine/beer lovers!

Perfect For: First dates – the cozy environment is great for a table of two; simple menu takes the worry out of what to order; and bocce ball is a fun icebreaker activity

Favorite Menu Item: Dino (fior di latte, tomato and mortadella) and the Nutella crostini for dessert

New to Hoboken is Union Hall – a gastro pub under the leadership of Executive Chef, Matthew Arlington (who trained under celebrity chef Amanda Freitag and learned how to run a world class restaurant at Mario Batalli and Joe Bastianich’s Esca). The city skyline lends a scenic backdrop for Union Hall’s comfortable and charismatic vibe. The menu features an array of small plates, each infusing flavors from around the world. Decadent dishes, like Truffled Scallop Toast, Pepperoni Pizza Cavatelli and Black-Eyed Pea Hummus are some of the many bites that can be enjoyed alongside more than 50 wines by the bottle, an additional 25 by the glass, and a sundry of cocktails and hand-crafted brews.

Industrial accents enhance the large indoor space, while high top ledges look out to the Manhattan skyline.
